Frigate deal is win-win for Japan, Australia, Trump, analysts say

The Australian government’s decision to pick the upgraded Japanese Mogami-class frigate for its future fleet was welcomed in Washington, with observers underscoring how it benefits not only Japan and Australia, but also the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Australia’s selection of the Mogami is “brilliant,” retired Adm. Gary Roughead, former chief of naval operations and commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, told Nikkei Asia.

“Beyond Australia acquiring an extremely capable and modern warship of unmatched construction quality, the decision will deliver greater regional naval interoperability and repair efficiency. For Australia and Japan, it’s a naval win-win,” he said.
